We’ve all seen self-help gurus motivating audiences on television or at sold-out seminars. Tony Robbins, Dr. Phil, Deepak Chopra, and the like have made a fortune motivating people to chase their passion and change their lives. But not every self-help guru is as successful as the big-name guys you’ve seen talking to Oprah… some of them are struggling and failing as often (or more) than the people they’re trying to motivate. That’s where comedian Tom Rubin got the idea for his hilarious one-man show Yes You Can’t, which is playing now at El Cortez Hotel & Casino in Downtown Las Vegas.
Rubin graduated from Harvard then moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a comedy writer and performer, so he’s clearly got some experience in navigating competitive worlds. Though he’s made a name for himself as a stand-up performer and hilarious talking head who has appeared on CNN and Fox News, Rubin has seen enough failure in his life that he was inspired to create his hilarious one-man show. His experience in the worlds of Ivy League Universities, corporate America, and show business gave him plenty of material to work with in creating his show skewering self-help culture.
The show is presented like a real self-help seminar, with Rubin starring as a “success guru” attempting to inspire the crowd… but the cleverly written show takes darker turns that turn the cliches and canned phrases used by the hackier real life gurus on their heads. Rubin describes himself as “the world’s leading expert on failure,” and his darkly funny show leaves audiences laughing… even if it doesn’t actually inspire them.
If you’re looking for inspiration that will motivate you to turn your life around, get tickets to see Tony Robbins or Deepak Chopra speak the next time they come to your town… but if you’re looking to laugh for a night, get tickets to see Tom Rubin in his hilarious one-man show, Yes You Can’t at El Cortez Hotel & Casino in Downtown Las Vegas.
